Year 4 Mr Kay

Mr Kay

Welcome to Year 4!

What a fantastic year we've had! So many memories, enjoy your summer!

Our topic in RE this term is Islam. This week we visited Masjid -E-Aqsa Mosque on Fishwick Parade. The children were able to see first hand where Muslims go to worship and we talked about the similarities and differences between the Mosque and the Church.

This week the children have been experimenting with primary colours and creating secondary colours. We are developing our painting skills and hope to paint a picture in the style of Vincent Van Gogh at the end of the term.

This week the children have set up an investigation into what plants need to grow. Each group planted four plants. One plant will not be watered, one will not receive sunlight and one will not have any soil.

Father Miller visited the class this week to talk about the Feast of Corpus Christi. He brought with him a Monstrance. Ask your child all about it, can they remember what Corpus Christi means?

Former pupil turned Scientist, Rebecca Kay (Preston's College) , came back to St Joseph's to help Year 4 investigate germs. The children worked with specialist equipment to test the amount of germs in different places.

This week our theme has been 'Healthy me'. The children have really enjoyed learning all about the importance of good health. The children made their own healthy Pizzas!

This week, Year 4 have been adapting the 'Sound Collector' poem by Roger McGough. Kian Jone has written his own outstanding version, 'The Noise Collector'.

Before our Roman museum trip, we completed a Roman march with the shield we made.

The children made a Roman town collage and a Roman soldier class collage.

This week in our Topic lesson, we used our catapults to reenacted the Roman invasion of Britain.

Today in Year 4 we made Roman catapults. This was a very challenging activity that the children thoroughly enjoyed. Next week we will be using our catapults to destroy a Celtic village during a Roman invasion!

Welcome back Year 4! We made a great start to the Summer term by making Roman shields!

Congratulations to Aidan and Abigayle who recently won a city wide poetry competition. The children had their poems published in Preston North End's match day programme. A fantastic achievement!

Some of the Year 4's took part in an Easter service at English Martyr's Church.

In our Science topic 'magnets' we have been discovering if all metals are magnetic.

An outstanding independent write from Wiktoria. We completed an eye witness report from the perspective of a Seagull.

Year 4 used instruments to play a Roman song.

Today we began our new Topic, the Romans! The children made their own Roman coins.

Also this week Year 4 have made Stone Age Clay Pots. The children had lots of fun learning a new skill.

Michael Rosen Rap - Michael Rosen

The Year 4 class have voted to learn and perform the poem 'The Michael Rosen Rap'. Michael Rosen is quickly becoming their favourite poet!

The Year Four's have been looking at different Poetry performances. Here's the our favourite, Chocolate Cake - Michael Rosen.

Year 4

Welcome back! I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas break! It has been brilliant hearing all about the wonderful things the children got up to. Please keep checking the web page for updates.

Homework

Homework will be given on a weekly basis every Friday and will be expected to be returned the following Wednesday. Your children will receive a piece of Maths and English every week and a topic linked project each half term.

Alongside this we ask that the children read for a short amount of time each evening, this can be their home reading book, a book on bug club or any books or comics from home.

Our class Novel this term is the magnificent Stig Of The Dump written by Clive King. The children are enjoying the interesting description in the book. Ask your child about the book, who is their favourite character in the story?

Mr Kay & Mrs Cooper

We all go to St Joseph's Primary School (Yellow Submarine).

The children also made their own version of the song 'Yellow Submarine'.

Yellow Submarine, Year 4, St. Joseph's.

Our new topic is 'Rock and Roll'. We have been learning about the history of Rock and Roll in our Music lessons. The children learnt a new song to perform.

A fantastic end to the Autumn term in Year 4.

This week we have been looking at inverted commas. This is a fantastic effort from Stephen who not only used inverted commas effectively, he also used fronted adverbials and action within his narrative.

This week the children had a visit from Warburtons and made their own healthy sandwich and sandwich box.

This term we are looking at 'Healthy Eating'. Today the children investigated the amount of sugar in popular drinks. The results were surprising! Ask your child about the effects of too much sugar on the body.

A huge congratulations to Miss Bell and our Year 4 athletics team, who came 2nd out of 32 schools at a recent competition! I'm immensely proud of their effort and hard work. They represented the school in an outstanding manor.
