Home learning for Year 3

Tuesday 2nd June 2020

English

This week is all about the character, Flat Stanley. He is a boy who becomes flat after a bulletin board falls on him in the night! The children are familiar with Flat Stanley as we focused on one of his books earlier this year. Explore the story by reading and viewing the online versions together.

Read together and/or listen on YouTube Chapter One - The Big Bulletin Board Both links below. Flat Stanley to read: https://kingauthor.co/books/Jeff%20Brown/Flat%20Stanley/Flat%20Stanley%20-%20Jeff%20Brown.pdf

Flat Stanley – version on YouTube (from start to 2:30 mins):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVsiFx9ZyFo

Discuss the story so far together and consider these questions:

  • What would it be like to be flat?
  • What would you do?
  • How would you feel?

  • What adventures would you have?

Write answers to these questions with your own ideas. Check all your sentences for spelling and punctuation together.

You could begin to think of ideas for your own story about being flat! Think about these ideas:

  • How might a new character become flat?
  • What would they do? How would their family react?
  • What adventures might your new character have?

Spelling

Please focus on the words - actual, consider, different, enough, forwards,

Write each word with your opposite hand (so if you are right handed - use your left and if you are left handed - use your right).

Maths

Bar charts (statistics)

This week we are going to look at a different type of graph - the bar chart.

Go to page 47 in your study book and read them to find out another way to display and read statistics/data. Then go to your workbook and complete page 53.

Do not forget to go on TT rockstars to practise your times tables, I am seeing some good scores from you all on there. Did you know you can customise your rock star and earn coins to buy new outfits?

Thank you

Below is the list of the year 3/4 statutory words - these are the words that the children need to know how to read and spell by the end of year 4.

We practise a selection of these each week in out spelling test.

This is an online copy to go alongside the paper copy that was in your home learning packs. Please continue to learn a few words each week using the methods I outlined on the sheet.
