Whole Class Guided Reading

Guided reading at St. Joseph's is where we aim to promote a love of reading and expose the children to a range of text which have been carefully selected. The texts ensure that all children are exposed to a range of authors, genres and cultures. We model reading fluently to the children, as well as asking the children to read aloud independently, in partners or as a group. We believe that being able to read fluently is the key to success and understanding what is read is vital. In our guided reading sessions we encourage book talk and promote discussions around vocabulary through the use of focussed questioning. Children who are falling below the expected standard are identified quickly and a reading diagnostic is carried out and support put in place to enable children to 'keep up'

What is Reading Fluency?

Fluency is a child’s ability to read a book or other text with accuracy, at a reasonable rate, and with appropriate expression. Reading fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension.
