My name is Mr Nickeas and I am the class teacher for Year 1B. I hope that you have all had a wonderful summer and I am looking forward to working with you and your children this year. Our teaching assistant is Miss Griffin who will help and support the learning in our classroom. We use Class Dojo to communicate with parents and you can send me messages via Dojo if necessary. I am usually available at the end of the school day if you ever have any questions or concerns, feel free to come and have a word!
Our Learning Journey:
English: In English this half term we will be focusing on thinking about and writing sentences with the correct punctuation. We will also look at the story 'Dogger' and use adjectives to describe characters in our story.
Maths: In Maths this half term, our unit will be addition and subtraction within 10. We will also be working to develop our counting and mental maths skills. We will focus on number bonds.
Topic: Our topic for Autumn 2 is History. We are looking at the Great Fire of London (1666). We will learn about the events and also create a piece of artwork! Pictured below is Year 1 being shown how and why the fire spread so quickly!
Science: In science we will be learning all about 'Materials'. We will look at a variety of materials, discover the properties of these materials and investigate what these materials could be used for. We will also look at seasons and perform an oracy task for the Autumn weather!
RE: In RE we are going to be exploring a unit called 'Prophecy and Promise'. We focus on Mary and also the Christmas Story.
Computing: In computing we’re covering the 'Online Safety' and 'Grouping and Sorting' units on Purple Mash.
Key Reminders
Phonics:
In year one we have daily phonics lessons which will progress at a speed suitable for each child. A helpful way to help children improve with their phonics at home is to read daily with them. If you would like additional support for your child’s phonics journey there are lots of helpful videos online. I would recommend the following: RWI Speed Sounds (Set 2 & 3)
Thank you for reading about Year 1 and we are looking forward to a fun year of learning!
Mr Nickeas and Miss Griffin.
