Year 1B

My name is Mr Nickeas and I am the class teacher for Year 1B.  I hope that you have all had a wonderful summer and I am looking forward to working with you and your children this year.  Our teaching assistant is Miss Griffin who will help and support the learning in our classroom. We use Class Dojo to communicate with parents and you can send me messages via Dojo if necessary.  I am usually available at the end of the school day if you ever have any questions or concerns, feel free to come and have a word!

Our Learning Journey:

English: In English this half term we will be focusing on diary writing for the Great Fire of London, using first person and past tense. We will then be learning the story of 'Zog' and changing the main character to create our own short piece of writing!

Maths: In Maths this half term, our unit will be place value to 20! We will be counting to and from 20 starting with different numbers and also looking at tens and ones.

Topic: Our topic for Spring 1 is Geography. We are looking at 'Hot and Cold Places'. We will learn about the North and South Pole and where they are on earth. We will also look at where different places are in relation to the equator. Children will then compare these places to where our school is in Preston!

Science: In science we will be learning all about 'Animals including humans'. We will look at a variety of animals, and the basic body parts of the human body.

RE: In RE we are going to be exploring a unit called 'Galilee to Jerusalem'  We focus on Jesus being presented at the temple and God's mission for Jesus on earth. We recognise his importance and how he influenced the people he met.

Computing: In computing we’re covering the 'pictograms' and 'lego builders' topic.

Key Reminders

  • PE will be on a Wednesday afternoon. Please make sure your child has their full PE kit, including  pumps, in school each week.
  • Homework will be given out on a Friday. Please can this be returned by Wednesday.
  • Reading Books will be sent home each night please can you read with your child each night and sign their home reading diary.
  • Your child can bring a water bottle into school with water only.

Phonics:

In year one we have daily phonics lessons which will progress at a speed suitable for each child. A helpful way to help children improve with their phonics at home is to read daily with them. If you would like additional support for your child’s phonics journey there are lots of helpful videos online. I would recommend the following: RWI Speed Sounds (Set 2 & 3)

Thank you for reading about Year 1 and we are looking forward to a fun year of learning!

Mr Nickeas and Miss Griffin.
