  • Y2 Assembly about Mother's Day

    Thu 23 Mar 2017

On Thursday morning Year 2 did the Mother’s day assembly. The children were very confident as they all had learnt their lines and they enjoyed themselves. They spoke about how Mothering Sunday is a special day for everybody who looks after us and it is a day to give thanks. The children recognised that our mothers or carers are doctors when we are hurt; chefs when we are hungry; builders to fix things; police when there is trouble and a detective when things go missing. Well done Year 2!

  • The Bishop's visit to St.Joseph's Church and St.Joseph's School

    Mon 20 Mar 2017

On this year's official feast day of St Joseph, Monday March 20th, the parish and children of St Joseph’s celebrated a very special Mass to mark a significant day for both the school and the parish. Not only was it our patron saint's day but it was also the end of the parish novena and the anniversary of the church's consecration. The Bishop of Lancaster, Bishop Michael, officiated and was warmly welcomed by a packed church of our school children from St Joseph's, as well as representatives from neighbouring schools in the parish of St John XXIII, St. Teresa's, St Augustine's, English Martyrs and St Ignatius.

Fr John Millar has recently joined the parish and has thrown himself wholeheartedly into the life of St Joseph's. He has taught the children to sing some of the Mass responses in Latin. The enthusiasm with which the children have embraced this initiative is moving.

Before the Mass began Father Millar led the congregation in a last minute rehearsal and they did not let him down. The children’s behaviour was impeccable and their responses throughout were a credit to them all.

After communion we were all held spellbound while two of the junior girls, Abby and Claudia sang Panis Angelicus from the pulpit, a challenge even for the most experienced soloist.

After Mass the parishioners and Bishop were invited into the school hall for refreshments. They were greeted by the KS1 children on the corridor.

Well done to all the children and staff at St Joseph's. I am sure we will look back on this day with joy and with pride.

  • Reception Chicks

    Mon 20 Mar 2017

    Our Class Chicks

Last week, Reception one and two had some visitors come to our class- some eggs from a farm! We looked after the eggs and kept them warm in the incubator, then on Friday they started to hatch!

We now have eleven chicks in a brooder box with a lightbulb to keep them warm. The children have all been very excited to see them. We will be thinking of some names for them this week.

  • Bikeability

    Mon 13 Mar 2017

Last week, some of the children in Year 5 and Year 6 completed their Level 2 Bikeability training. This involved training and testing on various aspects of riding their bike safely on the road. Over two full days the children not only learnt to improve their bike safety and awareness of potential road hazards, but also the Highway Code rules for cyclists and how to apply these when riding around. The course split the training into two parts; part one on the school playground, followed by part two - using their new skills on the real roads around the school area. The children had great fun whilst taking part in a great learning opportunity which improves their personal safety on the busy roads of Preston.

Each child who completed the course successfully received a certificate and Level 2 badge. On the back of their certificate is any advice from the course leaders for what the children need to do next to improve their skills further.

Many thanks to Matthew and Matt from Bikeability for teaching, training and assessing the children.

  • World Book Day 2017

    Thu 02 Mar 2017

Today, for World Book Day, the children took part in a book 'scavenger hunt'. They had to find books which contained certain characters, animals or themes. This allowed the children to discover books they may have previously overlooked. The children took part in a book discussion, talking about their favourite books and authors. We also created our own 'Where's Wally' puzzle.
