It is time to get creative!

I want you to imagine that you are an explorer and you have set sail to explore a new land.  This task is in 2 parts, but I am going to leave this task for a few days to give you plenty of time to complete this.

Task 1

Imagine that you have arrived in this new land.  Draw a detailed picture to show me what this new land is like.  Write some sentences to tell me what there is at this new land.  Let your imagination run wild, think of interesting and exciting things in your new world.  What can you see?  What can you hear?

Task 2

Use your creative skills to make your new land.  You could use things from your recycling box to make a 3D model or you could paint a picture or even use playdough to make your new land.  You may even have your own ideas.

I look forward to seeing your finished designs in a few days time.

Draw a picture of a family listening to the announcement on the wireless (radio).

Around your picture write down:

  • What would the family be thinking?
  • What would the family say to each other?

History

Many people had big street parties to celebrate the end of the war. These street parties would mean that people brought tables and chairs into the street and every house would make food to share. It was like a huge party. People would play music and decorate their houses. Everybody was proud of the soldiers and their country and wanted to celebrate this.

Task: Design an invitation for your own VE Day Street party.

Think about:

•          Telling people to decorate their houses

•          What type of food would you ask people to bring?

•          What should people wear?

•          Why is this celebration so important?

•          Make your invitation bright and colourful.

Once the information has been gathered, ask your child to write an information poster on their chosen animal. They could include drawings or diagrams with labels.

They could include a ‘Did you know?’ fact box. This could take the form of a question, e.g.

Did you know that baby cats are called kittens?

Encourage the independent use of phonics for spelling and the word ‘and’ to join phrases and parts of a sentence.

Day 4 Focus : Hariy Maclary

Look at the book and spot the breeds of dogs in the book.

Consider other types of breeds of dogs that might be friends with Hairy Maclary.

You may have a family dog that hasn’t been mentioned but if not, have a look online at different types.

Watch this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKG89O05K5A

Parents you might need to read the information as it may be tricky for Y1 children to read. Pause and discuss each breed focusing on new vocabulary.

Task

Ask - which dogs were your favourites and why?

Choose a few. Next give them a name e.g. Patty poodle or Pete the pug. Write the names of the chosen dogs down using capital letters for names.

Discuss using the information from the video what they might be like. Encourage real and made up personality traits drawing from the original character ideas. Write some sentences about your new dogs, e.g.

Patty the Poodle is fluffy and likes to doodle.

Pete the pug is all happy and smug.

Note: The sentences do not have to rhyme but encourage the children to use the word ‘and’ to join ideas, e.g. Tiny Terry is loyal and friendly.

English

This week our English work is going to be based around a fantastic story called: Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy, written by Lynley Dodd.  You can find this story at https://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/have-some-fun/storybooks-and-games/hairy-maclary/

Listen to the story or have a go at reading the story yourself. Maybe read/listen to the story a few times and join in with the bits that you can and the bits which repeat.

Talk about the story with your adult, which characters are in the story?, where is the story happening?, what happens in the story?

Think about the names of the dogs, why do you think that the dogs have been given these names?

Task: Write a sentence about each of the dogs.

I think he is called Hairy Maclary because...

I think he is called Muffin McClay because...

Can you write a sentence for every dog in the story?

If you have any time maybe you could draw your favourite dog in the story.
